Distribution

West of Shark Bay, Western Australia; Also Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Atlantic and Indian oceans.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Greek mekistos (= longest) and nema (= thread, filament) in reference to the greatly elongated upper pectoral-fin ray.

Talismania mekistonema Sulak 1975, Bulletin of Marine Science 25(1): 88, figs 1-4. Type locality: Tongue-of-the-Ocean, R/V Columbus Iselin station 80, Atlantic, 23°53'30" to 23°54'00"N, 77°02'36" to 77°04'30"W.
