Distribution |
Off the Northwest Shelf, Western Australia, and off Newcastle to off Kiama, New South Wales. Elsewhere the species is circumglobal in tropical and warm temperate seas, except absent from the eastern Pacific. The species is benthopelagic on the continental slope, including on seamounts ridges and rises, typically between 250-700 metres depth. |

Etymology |
The specific name is from the Greek mikrós (= small) and cheir (= hand), in reference to the smaller pectoral fin of this species when compared with that of Neoscopelus macrolepidotus. |
