Distribution |
Off Sydney, New South Wales, to off Madura, Western Australia. Elsewhere the species is circumglobal in southern waters (also recorded from the North Atlantic). |

Biology |
Lanternfishes use counter-illumination to regulate the brightness of their photophores for camouflage. The species undertakes diel vertical migration to feed in shallower waters at night. |
|
Etymology |
The specific name is from the Latin speculum (= mirror) and gero (to bear), literally covered with glistening mirrors. |
