Distribution

Off Sydney, New South Wales, to off Madura, Western Australia. Elsewhere the species is circumglobal in southern waters (also recorded from the North Atlantic).

Biology

Lanternfishes use counter-illumination to regulate the brightness of their photophores for camouflage.
The species undertakes diel vertical migration to feed in shallower waters at night.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin speculum (= mirror) and gero (to bear), literally covered with glistening mirrors.
