Distribution

Off Perth to off Dampier, Western Australia, and the Coral Sea off Cape York, Queensland, to off eastern Tasmania; also on the Lord Howe Rise and Norfolk Ridge in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Atlantic and Indo-south-west Pacific.
An oceanic, mesopelagic species that undertakes diel migrations from as deep as 550-850 m during the day, up to 60-850 m during the night for feeding purposes.

Features

Dorsal fin 14-16; Anal fin 16-20; Pectoral fin 11-12; Gill rakers (4-5)+(11-13); Lateral-line scales 36-39; AO photophores (6-8)+(6-9).
Pectoral fins weakly developed; Pol photophore on or slightly before vertical at origin of adipose fin; origin of adipose fin well in advance of vertical at base of last anal-fin ray.
