Features

Features of metamorphosed females: Dorsal-fin soft rays 6; Pectoral fin 13; Anal fin 4; Caudal fin 9; Premaxillary teeth 40; Lower jaw teeth 14-65 teeth; Upper jaw teeth 18-99; Vomerine teeth 4-9. 
Esca relatively small, width about equal to length, with a low rounded terminal escal papilla; anterior and posterior escal appendages well developed, usually bearing small secondary filaments; anterior escal appendage bulbous, sometimes branched; posterior escal appendage laterally compressed, row of small secondary filaments along outer margin, at most 5; posterobasal margin of terminal papilla with escal pore; skin covered with tiny close-set dermal spinules.

Size

Distinguishing characteristics of metamorphosed female: relatively small esca, width about equal to length; low rounded terminal escal papilla; well developed anterior and posterior escal appendages, usually bearing small secondary filaments; bulbous anterior escal appendage, sometimes branched; laterally compressed posterior escal appendage, row of small secondary filaments along outer margin, at most 5; posterobasal margin of terminal papilla with escal pore;
