Summary:
A pale yellowish rockcod with six dark bars encircling the body that extend onto the dorsal and anal fins, two prominent dark bars radiating from posterior half of the eye, the upper continuing through the eye to the tip of the snout.

Distribution

Moreton Bay, Queensland, to Seal Rocks, New South Wales, and possibly further south; also the Lord Howe Province and Norfolk Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Kermadec Islands and northern New Zealand.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin cinctus (= to gird, surround, bind with a belt or girdle), in reference to the dark bands encircling the body.
