Summary:
An iridescent silver dragonfish with a very short, compressed caudal peduncle, and very long pale barbel with pale filamentous bulb.

Distribution

Coral Sea off northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland. Elsewhere the species is circumglobal in equatorial to subtropical waters.

Features

Dorsal fin 13-14; Anal fin 15-17.
Slender body, caudal peduncle strongly compressed, extremely short. 

Feeding

Most likely feeds on mesopelagic fishes and some crustaceans.

Species Citation

Macrostomias longibarbatus Brauer 1902, Zoologischer Anzeiger 25(668): 283. Type locality: Gulf of Guinea, off Italian Somaliland.
