Distribution

Northwest Shelf, North of the Montebello Islands, Western Australia, and Cartier Reef in the Timor Sea, to the Arafura Sea north of the Cobourg Peninsula, Northern Territory, and the Queensland Plateau in the Coral Sea (possibly continuous across northern Australia). Elsewhere the species occurs in the Indo-west Pacific: India, east to New Caledonia, north to Japan.
Inhabits sand, mud, and gravel areas.

Features

Dorsal fin 103-106; Anal fin 79-86; Pectoral fin 12-13.
Body depth 2.4-2.9 in SL; mouth rather small, contained 2.0 to 2.6 times in head length, maxillary extending to below the anterior margin or anterior 1/3 of lower eye. Gill rakers present on upper limb. Caudal fin with 2 simple rays on upper and lower margins. Males with several anterior dorsal rays somewhat elongated.

Size


Etymology

The specific name is from the Greek poly (= many) and spilos (= blemish, mark, spot), in reference to the many small black spots on the otherwise transparent ocular side.

Anticitharus polyspilus Günther 1880, Report on the Scientific Results of the Voyage of H.M.S. Challenger 1873–1876, Zoology 1(6): 48, pl. 22 (fig.A). Type locality: Kai Islands, Challenger station 192, Indonesia, Banda Sea, depth 129 fathoms.
