Summary:
A dark-brown sole with patches of black cirri scattered on the body, and the gill openings restricted to the base of the pectoral fins.
This species was previously known as Brachirus setifer.

Distribution

North of Broome, Western Australia, to Gladstone, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Inhabits estuaries and inshore waters, including mangroves.

Features

Dorsal fin 69-77; Anal fin 53-61; Caudal fin 14-15; Pectoral fin 4-6; Pelvic fin 4; Lateral line scales 82-89. Vertebrae 41-42, 32-33 caudal, 8-10 precaudal.
Body oval, head strongly rounded, eyes small, pectoral and pelvic fins small; gill openings fused to the body except for a posterodorsal aperture near the pectoral fin. Thickened cirri present on most of blind side of the head, more numerous around edges; eyed side with small cirri around mouth and nostrils; long, thin, dark cirri in patches over body. Scales ctenoid; small scales covering bases of dorsal and anal fins.
Dorsal, anal and caudal fins united, anterior end of dorsal fin approaching anterior edge of upper lip.

Remarks

In Australia, this species has previously been Brachirus setifer and Pardicula setiferSee Desoutter, Munroe & Chapleau (2001) for discussion of generic placement.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin seta (bristle) and the suffix fero (to bear, carry), in reference to the "tufts of cirri" on the head and anterior part of the body.
