This species is known only from the type locality: the headwaters of the Rodger River in the Snowy River National Park, East Gippsland, Victoria.

Distribution	Restricted to a small stream in the headwaters of the upper Rodger River, a tributary of the Snowy River, within the Snowy River National Park in East Gippsland, Victoria.
Conservation	McDowall’s Galaxias is considered ‘Critically Endangered’ on the DSE 2013 ‘Advisory List of Threatened Vertebrate Fauna in Victoria’, and has been classified as ‘Critically Endangered’ by the Threatened Fishes Committee of the Australian Society of Fish Biology. McDowall’s Galaxias is threatened by potential colonisation of introduced trout, and the increased frequency of drought and bush fire in the region.
