Summary:
A pale brown to lilac-brown maskray with a symmetrical pair of brown blotches in the shoulder region, several faint white ocellated spots on the disc along with numerous smaller scattered black spots, and black and orange bands on the rear part of the tail.

Distribution

Erub (Darnley) Island, Queensland, to off Broken Bay, New South Wales. Elsewhere, the species occurs in Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and New Caledonia.

Colour

A pale brown to lilac-brown maskray with a symmetrical pair of brown blotches in the scapular region, several faint white ocellated spots on the disc along with numerous smaller scattered black spots, black and orange bands on the rear part of the tail, and a pale underside.

Etymology

The specific name trigonoides refers to this species having pelvic fins similar to Trygon, in being “entire, not marginated or divided” [–oides (= similar to)].
