Summary:
A tadpole-like snailfish with a pale body and orobranchial cavity, and a brownish-black peritoneum and stomach. The species has a large head and unpigmented pyloric caeca.

Vertebrae 12+35=47; Pectoral fin 25, radials 2, round, 1 +0+0 + 1; Caudal fin 4/5-9. Pleural ribs absent, hypural plate single, unslit. Head large, compressed laterally, mouth terminal. Teeth small, simple. Mandibular pores large, oval. Gill slit vertical, large, 12% SL, extending down in front of 8-9 pectoral-fin rays. HL 34.1, preAnal length 41.8, pelvic disc 7.7% SL. |

Etymology |
The specific name is from the Latin amplus (= large) and caput (= head), in reference to the large size of the head of this species. |
