Distribution |
Central New South Wales to Botany Bay, Sydney. Elsewhere the species is widespread in the Indo-west Pacific, from the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and East Africa, to southeast Asia, China and Japan. Inhabits reefs and also soft bottom areas, often in association with gorgonian corals and sea whips. |
Fisheries |
Taken as by-catch in commercial and artisanal fisheries in many parts of its range. Dried individuals are traded in the traditional Chinese medicine industry, and the species is also traded in the aquarium industry. |
