Summary:
A very small flathead with 2– 4 distinct blackish spots on the middle and rear parts of the pelvic fin.

Distribution |
West of Holothuria Reefs, off north Western Australia, to north of Curtis Island, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, east-Indo-west Pacific (West Papua, Indonesia). |
Features |
Onigocia sibogae differs other species in the genus in having the following combination of characters: Dorsal fin usually I+VII-11; Anal fin 11; Caudal fin 8; Lateral line scales 30–31, anterior two or three scales with spine; three scales between second dorsal fin and lateral line. Ocular and interopercular flaps absent, upper iris lappet usually finely crenate; two or three antrorse lachrymal spines, usually no spines on the inner ridge of the lachrymal; 2–5 preocular spines; no notch on the suborbital ridge below the eye; suborbital ridge serrated by 16–26 small spines. |
Remarks |
This species had previously been considered to be a synonym of Onigocia oligplepis (Regan, 1908). |
Etymology |
The specific name sibogae is based on the vessel "Siboga", used in the Siboga Expedition of 1899-1900, in which the type specimens were collected. |
