Distribution

Arafura Sea, Northern Territory, and off Dunk Island, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the west Pacific: Vietnam east to the Philippines, and north to Japan. Inhabits sandy and muddy areas at depths to 300 m.

Features

Pelvic fin 8; Lateral-line scales 160-175; Vertebrae 54-55.
Centre of lower lip smooth.

Similar Species

The somewhat similar Gonorynchus greyi differs in having nine pelvic fin rays, and a distinctive forked lower lip.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin abbreviatus (= shortened), possibly in reference to the shorter head compared with that of Gonorynchus gonorynchus.
