Distribution

West of Shark Bay to southwest of Rowley Shoals, Western Australia. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Indo-West Pacific: South Africa, Saya de Malha Bank, Madagascar and Mascarenes (Mauritius) east to Philippines and Mariana Islands, north to Japan and Ogasawara islands (Japan), south to New Caledonia.

Features

Dorsal fin V-VII, 12-15; Anal fin IV, 15-17; Pectoral fin 13; Pelvic fin I, 7; Lateral-line scales 53-62; Cheek scale rows 5. 
Body oval, laterally compressed; lacrimal without spines; anterior and posterior nostrils close together, distance apart shorter than diameter of anterior nostril. Dorsal-fin base longer than anal-fin base; pelvic fin origin below dorsal-fin origin. Lateral line scales not extending onto caudal fin. 

Size

To 30 cm SL.

Fisheries

Taken in deep bottom trawls in parts of its range.
