Summary:
A pale yellowish-brown to brown triggerfish with a narrow whitish to bluish or yellowish-orange bar below the rear of the eye, a yellowish-brown triangle edged in white on the tail, and sometimes a bluish chin and belly.
Small juveniles are dark brown above and white below with a dark horseshoe-shaped mark on the tail.

Shark Bay to off Dampier, and offshore reefs of north Western Australia, and possibly north to off the Cobourg Peninsula, Northern Territory, Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea, and the far northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, and reefs in the Coral Sea, to Narooma, New South Wales; also Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean, and the Lord Howe Province in the Tasman Sea. |
Etymology |
The specific name chrysopterum is from the Greek chrysos (= gold) and pteron (= wing or fin), presumably in reference to the mostly yellow tail of this species. |
