Distribution

Great Barrier Reef, Queensland; also Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean, and the Lord Howe Province in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific: from the western Mascarenes and Chagos Archipelago, to the Tuamotu and Marquesas Islands, northwards to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan, and south to Australia and New Caledonia.

Etymology

The specific name auromarginatus is from the Latin aurum (= gold) and marginatus (= bordered, edged or margined) in reference to the yellow fin margins.
