Summary:
A pale brownish porcupinefish becoming white below, with black lips, a blackish bar below the eye, a broad dark bar or blotch on the lower part of the gill cover, two broad bars or blotches on the lower side, and often a small dark blotch on the upper part of the pectoral-fin base and another on the dorsal-fin base. The Fourbar Porcupinefish lacks spots on the fins and has a pair of prominent spins on the upper part of the caudal peduncle. 
Juveniles are dark grey to almost black above becoming white below, with the body covered in numerous irregular black spots.

Distribution

Northwest Shelf, Western Australia, to the Arafura Sea, Northern Territory. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west Pacific.
Inhabits sand-rubble areas.

Features

Dorsal fin 10-12; Anal fin 10-11; Pectoral fin 21-23. 
Spines short, most on head and belly two-rooted and erectile, spines on sides and back three-rooted and fixed, those on sides and back three-rooted and fixed; dorsal part of caudal peduncle with a pair of prominent spines.

Fisheries

May be taken as bycatch in commercial trawls.
