A pinkish-brown to dark brown leatherjacket with a bright yellow ring around the eye, a blackish band usually around the snout, an orange caudal fin, soft dorsal and anal fins spotted, clear or with a yellowish-orange base, and a dark brown pectoral-fin base.

Recorded in Australia from the Capricorn Group, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, to Bermagui, New South Wales, also Coringa-Herald Cay and Lihou Reef, in the Coral Sea, and Elizabeth Reef and Middleton Reefs, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere, the species occurs in the Western Pacific.
Inhabits coral and rocky reefs in depths to about 15 m.


Meristic features: Dorsal fin I-II + 31-34; Anal fin 27-31; Vertebrae 19. 
First dorsal-fin spine strong, armed with 2 rows of prominent, laterally-directed barbs. Posterior margin of ventral flap not attached to large and barbed pelvic rudiment. Scales on posterior half of body with spinules, number increasing with age; adult male with scale rugosities
