Summary:
An easily recognised leatherjacket with a blackish to dark bluish blotch or bar around the gill opening in front of the pectoral-fin base. Males also have a blue area on the side of the snout and lower head, a blue stripe on the pelvic flap, blue spots on the pectoral-fin base and on the dorsal and anal fins.

Distribution

Recorded in the Australian EEZ from the Houtman Abrolhos to the Dampier Archipelago, Western Australia, and from the Murray Islands, Queensland, to at least Shellharbour, New South Wales, with juveniles further south. Also at Middleton Reef, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island in the Tasman Sea. Found elsewhere in the tropical Indo-West Pacific.
Inhabits lagoon and seaward reefs in depths of 1-20 m.

Features

Dorsal fin I-II + 29-34; Anal fin 26-30. 
Scale spinulation at midbody closely packed. Male scale ridge rugosities develop at about 8 cm SL. Strong first dorsal-fin spine. Large pelvic-fin rudiment narrowly attached to posterior margin of ventral flap.
