Distribution

Prince Regent River, Kimberley Region, Western Australia, to the Boyne River, Gladstone, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in Papua New Guinea.
Inhabits brackish and estuarine areas of northern Australia.

Similar Species

This species was previously considered to be a synonym of Pardachirus hedleyi or P. poropterus.

Etymology

Named in honor of zoologist Max Rauther, Director, Württemberg Natural History Collection (now Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde, Stuttgart, Germany), who made type specimen available and translated Chabanaud’s description into German. (https://www.etyfish.org/pleuronectiformes3/)
