Distribution

Coral Sea, southeast of Herald Cay to south of Marion Reef, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs on the Chesterfield Plateau, New Caledonia.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin nigri- (= black) and frons (= forehead), in reference to the darkened areas on the head and anterior dorsal-fin rays.
