  • Longsnout Flounder Longsnout Flounder Ammotretis rostratus Günther 1862 Actinopterygii > Pleuronectiformes > Rhombosoleidae > Ammotretis A sandy-coloured to pale brown flounder speckled with variable darker spots, and a whitish pectoral fin on the blind side (underside). The Longsnout Flounder has both eyes on the right side of the head, the dorsal fin originating at the tip of the hooked snout, and two pelvic fins This is the most common flounder in Port Phillip, Victoria - mostly extremely well-camouflaged juveniles that are difficult to see.

  • Spotted Flounder Spotted Flounder Ammotretis lituratus (Richardson 1844) Actinopterygii > Pleuronectiformes > Rhombosoleidae > Ammotretis A well-camouflaged beige, sandy or greyish flounder, sometimes with a number of darker spots scattered on the head, body and/or fins.
  • Mueller's Flounder Mueller's Flounder Arnoglossus muelleri (Klunzinger 1872) Actinopterygii > Pleuronectiformes > Bothidae > Arnoglossus A brownish flounder with variable dark and pale spots and speckles, and usually large dark spots on the midside. Although difficult to distinguish from the Bass Strait Flounder, Arnoglossus bassensis , Mueller's Flounder has slightly larger scales and eyes, and appears to be more common in Port Phillip, Victoria.

  • Greenback Flounder Greenback Flounder Rhombosolea tapirina Günther 1862 Actinopterygii > Pleuronectiformes > Rhombosoleidae > Rhombosolea A greenish to greyish or brownish flounder, with a pale underside, a distinctly rhomboidal shape, a long fleshy snout, and no pelvic fins on the underside. Darker spots and blotches may be present on the upper side.
  • Elongate Flounder Elongate Flounder Ammotretis elongatus McCulloch 1914 Actinopterygii > Pleuronectiformes > Rhombosoleidae > Ammotretis A sandy coloured right-eyed flatfish with small black spots covering the head, body and fins, and a whitish blind side.
  • Smalleye Flounder Smalleye Flounder Arnoglossus micrommatus Amaoka, Arai & Gomon 1997 Actinopterygii > Pleuronectiformes > Bothidae > Arnoglossus A pale greyish-brown flounder with three dusky spots along the straight part of the lateral line, widely spaced small dark spots along the pelvic, dorsal and anal fins, and a whitish underside. The species has a prominent hump on the snout before the eyes.
  • Shortfin Flounder Shortfin Flounder Ammotretis brevipinnis Norman 1926 Actinopterygii > Pleuronectiformes > Rhombosoleidae > Ammotretis A brownish flounder with small blackish spots on the side, broad outer margins on the dorsal, anal and caudal fins much darker than bases, a distinct large dark spot on the pectoral-fin base, and a whitish underside. The pectoral fin of the underside is much shorter than that of eyed side, and the first ray has a bulbous tip.
  • Derwent Flounder Derwent Flounder Taratretis derwentensis Last 1978 Actinopterygii > Pleuronectiformes > Pleuronectidae > Taratretis A small pale tan coloured flounder with many irregular fine brown dots and pale markings scatered on the body, dark blotches and orange and black markings on the fins, and a whitish underside. The Derwent Flounder lacks a hooked snout (rostral hook).
  • Smalltooth Flounder Smalltooth Flounder Pseudorhombus jenynsii (Bleeker 1855) Actinopterygii > Pleuronectiformes > Paralichthyidae > Pseudorhombus A brownish flatfish with two conspicuous ocelli above and below the lateral line and one or two ocelli on rear part of the lateral line before the tail, and a dark blotch at junction of straight and curved portions of lateral line. 
  • Bass Strait Flounder Bass Strait Flounder Arnoglossus bassensis Norman 1926 Actinopterygii > Pleuronectiformes > Bothidae > Arnoglossus A brownish-grey flounder with large blackish blotches along the midside and near the upper and lower edges of the body,  fins sometimes with scattered dark spots, and a whitish underside.
  • Largetooth Flounder Largetooth Flounder Pseudorhombus arsius (Hamilton 1822) Actinopterygii > Pleuronectiformes > Paralichthyidae > Pseudorhombus A greenish or brownish left-eyed flounder with a large dark blotch at front of the straight part of the lateral line and a second midway to the tail, often with large dark spots or rings that are sometimes encircled with small whitish spots, and small dark brown spots on the fins.
