Summary:
A dwarfgoby with a large dark semicircular or crescent-shaped mark over the full depth of the pectoral-fin base and extending onto the finrays, seven small dark spots along the ventral midline from anal-fin origin posteriorly to the end of the caudal peduncle (including three along the anal-fin base), and 4-5 obscure subcutaneous bars along the body. Males may have an elongate first dorsal-fin spine.

Distribution |
Far northern Great Barrier Reef and reefs in the Coral Sea, to at least One Tree Island, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, south-west Pacific: New Caledonia (including Chesterfield Islands), Tonga, and Australia (Great Barrier Reef). Inhabits fringing reefs, reef slopes, lagoons, and outer reef slopes at depths to 21 m. |

Dorsal fin VI + I,8-9; Anal fin 1,8-9; Pectoral fin 15-17; Pelvic fin 1,4; Caudal fin, branched rays 11-15, segmented rays 17; Lateral scale rows 23-25; Transverse scale rows 5-6; Vertebrae, 10+16=26. Pectoral-fin rays more often simple than branched, except rays 12 and 13, occasionally all rays unbranched; rays 1-10 never branched; first dorsal-fin spine filamentous in males, rarely in females; fifth pelvic-fin ray rudimentary or absent.First dorsal spine of male may be elongate or filamentous, the longest extending to end of second dorsal fin base.Scales with 20-37 ctenii, 6-16 radii; breast scaleless. |

The specific name is from the Greek mono- (= one), and stigma (= mark or spot), in reference to the black blotch on the pectoral-fin base, |
