Distribution

Hibernia Reef, Western Australia, to Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea, and possibly eastern Australia. Most records from eastern Australia and Lord Howe Island are based on Eviota prasina and E. variola. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, east-Indo-west-central Pacific.
Inhabits areas with coral, algal covered rocks and rubble.

Features

Dorsal fin V-VI + I,8-10; Anal fin I,7-8. Pectoral-fin rays branched; urogenital papilla fimbriate; fifth pelvic-fin ray rudimentary or absent.

Etymology

The specific name zonura is from the Greek zona (= belt, girdle) and oura (= tailed) presumably in reference to the  'blackish bar before base of caudal'.
