Distribution

North of Nickol Bay, Western Australia, to Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea, and the Great Barrier Reef and reefs in the Coral Sea, to off Sydney, New South Wales; also Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the eastern Indian Ocean. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Indo-west-central Pacific: southern Japan, South China Sea, south to Australia and Papua New Guinea, west to Palau and the Marshall Islands, and possibly Sala y Gómez and Easter Island.
The species is pelagic in inshore waters around coral reef lagoons and in adjacent waters, including outer reef slopes, near the bottom over sandy substrates.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin praematurus (= premature), in reference to the neotenic form of this fish, which was originally thought to be a sexually mature larval halfbeak.
