Summary:
A mottled reddish to brown scorpionfish often with a large whitish area on the anterior body and a pale bar on the caudal peduncle.

Distribution |
Scott Reef, WA, Cartier and Ashmore reefs, Timor Sea, northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland and reefs in the Coral Sea; also Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea, and Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean. Elsewhere, the species occurs in the tropical Indo-west-central Pacific from the Red Sea to the French Polynesia and the Hawaiian islands. Inhabits near shore to outer reefs in areas of rich coral growth. |
Features |
Dorsal fin XIII, 8-10; Anal fin III, 5-6; Pectorla fin 17-19; Longitudinal scale series 47-51; suborbital ridge with 5-15 spinules. Interorbital area and snout scaled; small spines at midline between tympanic spines frequently present; interorbital spines present; extra spines usually present on upper rear margin of eye after supraocular spine; dorsal fin spines very short, usually no longer than orbit diameter; body often covered with small skin flaps. |
Similar Species |
Differs from other species of Scorpaenodes in having more than 5 spinous points o'n the suborbital ridge, and adults usually have 10 or more points. |
