Summary:
A mottled reddish to brown scorpionfish with four broad bars along the body, and a large black blotch on the rear of the spinous part of the dorsal fin.

Distribution |
North West Shelf, Western Australia, and the Arafura Sea, Northern Territory. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical east-Indo-west Pacific: East Andaman Sea, Singapore, South China Sea. Inhabits deep reefs and adjacent sandy and muddy areas. |

Dorsal fin XIII, 8-10; Anal fin III, 5; Pectoral fin 17-18. Suborbital bone with three spines. |
Etymology |
The species is named "in honour of the late Professor J. L. B. Smith for his noteworthy contributions to the knowledge of Indian Ocean scorpionfishes". |
