Summary:
A dusky yellow to brown damselfish with a black bar across the rear of the body, a cream to white caudal peduncle and tail, yellow pectoral fins, and a dark margin on the scales.

Distribution

Houtman Abrolhos to the Dampier Archipelago and offshore reefs of north Western Australia (juveniles south to Rottnest Island), Ashmore Reef and Cartier Island in the Timor Sea, and the far northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, and reefs in the Coral Sea, to the Solitary Islands, New South Wales, with juveniles south to Sydney; also Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean, and the Lord Howe Province and Norfolk Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical Indo-west-central Pacific.
Inhabits coral-rich and surge areas on clear lagoon and seaward reefs, often sheltering among the branches of Acropora and Pocillopora corals.

Feeding

Feeds on filamentous algae, small benthic invertebrates, and occasionally small fishes.

Similar Species

The similar Johnston Damsel, Plectroglyphidodon johnstonianus, differs in having a mostly yellow body, a broader black bar on the rear of the body and a yellow tail.

Etymology

The species is named in honour of George F. Dick, President of the Natural History Society of Mauritius (the type locality).
