Distribution

Scott Reef, Western Australia, and the northern Great Barrier Reef, and reefs in the Coral Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical West Pacific.

Dorsal fin VI + I, 8-9; Anal fin III; Pectoral fin 12-13; Pelvic fin I, 5; Caudal fin 17 (segmented rays); Gill rakers 1 + 5-6.

Size

To 15.5 mm SL

Colour

Colour of a freshly dead specimen: cheek and rear half of body yellow-green, translucent elsewhere, with 5 darkish internal body bars; anterior nasal tube red; a bar on the cheek below the pupil, 8 diffues saddles on back, and bases of caudal-fin rays pink; dorsal fins yellow; scale margins on rear half of body dark.

Similar Species

Trimmatom zapotes differs from all other species in the genus Trimmatom in having a scaled body and unbranched pelvic-fin rays.

Etymology

Named from the Greek zapotes, a hard drinker, in allusion to the red anterior nasal tubes of this species (Winterbottom, 1989).
