Inhabits sandy and rubble areas in lagoons and on sheltered reefs.

Similar Species

Differs from the similar Ctenogobiops pomastictus in having an elongate second dorsal-fin spine as an adult, 46-52 scales in a longitudinal series on the body (vs 55-59 in C. pomastictus), and one row (vs. two rows) of dark spots on the cheek.

Etymology

The specific name mitodes is from the Greek mitodes meaning 'threadlike' in reference to the filamentous second dorsal-fin spine of adults.
