Summary:
A dark green to dark brown clingfish, sometimes with a row of dark spots along the middle of the back, or completely covered with dark spots, 6-9 dark bars sometimes across the back, occasionally a white longitudinal band and/or with numerous small white blotches on side of head and body, and dark wavy cross bars sometimes on the lower surface of the head.

Distribution

Endemic to southern Australia from eastern Victoria to the Perth region, south Western Australia, and around Tasmania. Inhabits seagrass beds and shallow weed covered reefs.

Features

Dorsal fin 3-5; Anal fin 4-5; Caudal fin (approx) 10-12; Pectoral fin 19-20; Pelvic fin I, 4; Vertebrae 40.
Body slender; caudal peduncle prominent. Head only slightly flattened; snout wider than long, broadly rounded at tip; eyes of moderate size; lips narrow; mouth small, reaching to below front part of eyes, lower jaw slightly shorter than upper; teeth small, conical; no spine laterally on head; gill openings large, lateral. Urogenital papilla usually laid flat in post anal groove in preserved males.
No scales or lateral line; some sensory papillae on sides. 
Single dorsal fin with very short base, located posteriorly on body but separated from caudal fin by space at least twice length of dorsal fin base; anal fin similar to and opposite dorsal, anterior rays of dorsal fin each with low fleshy swelling at base; caudal fin rounded. Pectoral fins rounded, no fleshy pad ventrally at their bases. Pelvic fins united into rather small ventral sucking disc consisting of anterior and posterior halves, posterior border with row of small rounded flaps of tissue.

Colour

Dark green to dark brown, sometimes with row of dark spots along midline of back, or completely covered with dark spots; six to nine dark cross bars sometimes on back; sides of head and body occasionally with white longitudinal band and/or with numerous small white blotches. Lower surface of head sometimes with dark wavy cross bars.
