Genus Histiogamphelus


Summary:

An endemic Australian genus with 2 species having a high ridge along the snout. Both species are found in southern waters.

Body elongate, trunk shallow; head aligned with body; snout moderately long; STR and STAR discontinuous near rear of dorsal‑fin base; ITR and ITAR continuous; LTR not confluent with tail ridges; eggs brooded on open undersurface of tail just behind anal fin; tail not prehensile; dorsal fin closer to head than tip of tail, with base of moderate length; anal fin tiny, below rear half of dorsal fin; caudal fin very small, rounded; pectoral fins present.
