Distribution

Houtman Abrolhos to West Lewis Island, Dampier Archipelago, Western Australia.

Remarks

This species may be conspecific with the Bridled Clingfish, Lepadichthys frenatus.

Etymology

The specific name sandaracatus is from the pale yellow resin of the sandarac tree, a small cypress-like tree native to northern Africa, presumably in reference to the "uniform yellowish... or carmine" colour of this species in alcohol preservative.
