Summary:
A brownish to brownish-orange butterflyfish with a white head, a diffuse whitish band on the middle of the body, a black eye bar, a yellow tail and black lips.

Distribution

Ningaloo Reef, Rowley Shoals, and Scott Reef, Western Australia, Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea, and the northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland and reefs in the Coral Sea to Montague Island, New South Wales; also at Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean, and reefs in the Lord Howe Island region in the Tasman Sea. The species occurs elsewhere in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific.

Usually inhabits rocky reefs and deeper coral-rich areas in lagoons, reef channels and outer reef slopes - usually below 10 m.

Feeding

Feeds on hard and soft corals, algae, hydroids and zooplankton. Aggregations sometimes feed on zooplakton in the water column.

Chaetodon kleinii Bloch, 1790, Naturgesch. ausländisch. Fische 4: 7, pl. 218 (fig. 2). Type locality: East Indies.
