Distribution

Endemic to southern Australia, from Kangaroo Island, South Australia, to Dongara, Western Australia. The species appears uncommon, and small groups are usually seen sheltering under ledges and at cave entrances during the day.

Etymology

The specific name ornata is from the Latin ornamentum (= ornamented or ornate) in reference to the spectacular coloration of this species compared to its congeners.
