Summary:
A pinkish-brown to pale silvery greyish cardinalfish with a tapering midlateral stripe often bordered above and below by narrow iridescent white stripes, a small dark spot on the caudal peduncle just above the lateral line, and a black leading edge on the first dorsal fin.

Distribution

Ningaloo Reef and offshore reefs of north Western Australia, Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea, and the far northern Great Barrier Reef, and reefs in the Coral Sea, to at least the Capricorn Group, Queensland; also Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean. Elsewhere, the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific. 
During the day, small groups shelter under ledges, in crevices and the base of coral outcrops on coral and rocky reefs - often in silty areas.

Feeding

Nocturnal plnktivore - feeds over sandy areas at night.

Etymology

The specific name exostigma is from the Greek exo- (= out) and stigma (= mark) presumably in reference to the black spot on the caudal peduncle.
