A pinkish coffinfish covered in irregular yellowish spots and simple to divided (bifurcated) spinules over the entire body, with a relatively long 'fishing rod' (illicium) bearing a small greenish or pinkish lure that retracts into a shallow pale depression between the eyes.

Off Dunk Island, Queensland, to off the Bay of Fires, Tasmania, and eastern Victoria. Inhabits muddy substrates in depths of 122-419 m.

Chaunax endeavouri Whitley 1929, Aust. Zool. 5(4): 357. Type locality: 70-100 fathoms, east of Flinders Island, Bass Strait, Tasmania.
