West of Shark Bay, Western Australia; Also Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Atlantic and Indian oceans. |
Etymology |
The specific name is from the Greek mekistos (= longest) and nema (= thread, filament) in reference to the greatly elongated upper pectoral-fin ray. |
