Summary:
A silvery brown butterflyfish with a tubular snout, high dorsal and anal fins, and five dark bands on the body including the band encircling the tail base. Juveniles have an ocellus on the dorsal fin.

Distribution

Endemic to coastal waters of south-eastern Australia from Double Island Point in southern Queensland, to about Jervis Bay, New South Wales. Found on deep coastal reefs, around headlands and rocky estuaries.

Features

Soft dorsal and anal fins very angular with almost vertical fin margins. Fins of juveniles more rounded. 

Feeding

Omnivore - feeds on small crustaceans, worms and filamentous algae.

Biology

Usually forms monogamous pairs.

IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Least Concern

Similar Species

The Western Talma, Chelmonops curiosus, grows to a larger size and has longer dorsal and anal fins.
