Summary:
A rosy pink fish, slightly browner above, silvery below, with red fins and black tips on the caudal fin. The Cosmopolitan Rubyfish has a strongly forked tail and a very protrusible mouth.

Differs from the Bigscale Rubyfish, Plagiogeneion macrolepis, in its distribution and in having smaller and more numerous scales (lateral-line scales 67-74 vs. 48-51 scales in P. macrolepis).

Distribution

Recorded in Australia from east of Cape Byron, NSW (28°40'S) to Bass Strait between TAS and VIC (146°00'E). The species occurs elsewhere in the temperate, east Atlantic-Indo-west Pacific (New Zealand, St Paul and Amsterdam islands, South Africa, and the Atlantic west of Cape Town).

Feeding

Adults feed near the bottom on larger zooplankton.

Similar Species

Differs from the Bigscale Rubyfish, Plagiogeneion macrolepis, in its distribution and in having smaller and more numerous scales (lateral-line scales 67-74 vs. 48-51 scales in P. macrolepis). P. macrolepis occurs from Bass Strait to off Rottnest Island, Western Australia.
