Summary:
A greyish-brown flounder with three ocelli above and below the lateral line, and smaller dark rings and blotches scattered on body and median fins.

Distribution

Off Fraser Island, Queensland, to Flinders Island, Tasmania, and west to Kangaroo Island, South Australia. Elsewhere the species occurs in the east-Indo-west Pacific.
Inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms.

Features

Dorsal fin 74-80; Anal fin 58-61; Pectoral fin (eyed side) 11-12. 
Body elliptical, depth 2.1 to 2.3 times in SL; head length 4.1 to 4.4 times in SL; upper profile of head with shallow notch in front of upper eye; snout slightly protruded, shorter than eye diameter, upper-eye diameter 3.8 to 5.2 times in head length. Maxilla extending almost below middle of lower eye; upper-jaw length 3.9 to 4.6 times in head length. Teeth in both jaws small, close-set, no enlarged canines. Gill rakers slender, rather elongate. 
Scales usually cycloid on both sides, but sometimes weakly ctenoid on anterior part of body on eyed side. 

Colour

A greyish-brown flounder with pale-centred dark spots, many encircled with bright yellow dots: four or five along the lateral line, six within both the upper and lower margins of the body, three to four pairs of similar spots between the lateral line and the spots along the margin of the body, and two spots on the caudal peduncle. All fins are patterned with dark wavy lines, the dorsal and anal fins have a series of dark spots midway between the base and outer fin margin, and there are two dark blotches on the base of the caudal fin.
