Summary:
A tan false moray with a distinctive dark saddle-shaped marking on the nape, and a paler underside. The species is known only from the holotype from the Australian territory of Ashmore Reef and Cartier Island in the Timor Sea.

Distribution

Indian Ocean near Ashmore and Cartier Islands in the Timor Sea off north Western Australia, depth 397-405 m.

Features

Dorsal fin 385; Anal fin 357; Dorsal-fin rays anterior to anal fin origin 93; Total vertebrae 142; Predorsal vertebrae 12; Preanal vertebrae 42; Precaudal vertebrae 58.

Colour

In preservative: tan above, distinctly paler below; ventral pale area strongly demarcated from darker dorsum of the snout, from in front of unpigmented anterior nostril, continuing back above posterior nostril to margin of eye; posterior to eye, dorsal edge of ventral pale area becomes more irregular, but extends back to a distinctly darker, saddle-shaped pigment patch dorsal to gill opening; ventral pale area then tapers to base of anal fin slightly behind anus, but continues along base of anal fin for approximately 2/3 of body length; anal fin remains unpigmented to near tip of tail.

Similar Species

Differs from other species in the genus Chlopsis in having a high vertebral count (total vertebrae 142) and a distinctive dark saddle-shaped patch on the nape of the neck.

Etymology

The specific name sagmacollaris is from the Latin sagma (= saddle) and collaris (= necked) in reference to the distinctive dark pigment patch on the nape of the neck.
