Distribution

Offshore reefs of north Western Australia (Scott Reef), and the northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, to off Nambucca Heads, New South Wales; also Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean. Inhabits rocky areas on the continental shelf and upper slope, at depths between ~70-350 m, most abundant at ~100-200 m.

Features

Dorsal fin X, 10-11; Anal fin III, 8.
Interorbital space convex. Jaws about equal, or lower jaw slightly protruding. Bases of dorsal and anal fins without scales, their last soft rays extended into short filaments. Pectoral fins long, reaching level of anus. Scale rows on back parallel to lateral line. 

Feeding

Feeds on fishes and a range of benthic and pelagic invertebrates, including shrimps, crabs, cephalopods, and urochordates.

Fisheries

Taken on handlines in some areas.
