Summary:
A dark brown pufferfish with yellowish spots and a reticulated pattern on the back, a solid yellowish to brown stripe from above pectoral fin base to caudal fin base, 4 broad vertical brownish bands on the cheek (the 2nd band below the eye), and a white underside.

Distribution

Northern and central Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Indo-west Pacific. Inhabits coastal sand flats and seagrass beds in estuaries, often burying in the sand during the day with only the eyes exposed.

Feeding

Feeds mainly on molluscs, fishes, crustaceans.

Etymology

The specific name hypselogeneion is from the Greek "hypselos,"(= high), (= chin) in reference to the prominent, raised chin in this species.
