Genus Pseudophycis

A temperate Australasian genus with 4 species. Body slender, depth 20–25% SL; head slightly depressed anteriorly; mouth nearly horizontal, to just past eye; snout protruding slightly in advance of jaws; teeth uniformly small, pointed, band in each jaw; scales tiny, cycloid, well onto bases of unpaired fins, lateral-line pores in naked strip not related to adjacent scales; anus just in front of anal fin; 2 dorsal fins, first short-based, second very elongate of uniform height; anal fin similar to second dorsal fin; caudal fin rounded; pelvic-fin origin midway between eye and rear edge of preopercle.
