A worldwide genus with three species, one in Australian waters. Ceratoscopelus has more than 2 Prc photophores, jaws extending far behind the eye; many luminous patches or ‘scales’ in addition to primary photophores near dorsal and ventral borders of body, complete in specimens over 38 mm SL; large luminous ‘scales’ between ventral-fin and anal-fin bases unique to genus; procurrent caudal-fin elements as well-developed spines with basal hooks. Nafpaktitis et al. (1977) reviewed genus and 2 of 3 species.
