Distribution	Known in Australian waters from off Cape York, Queensland, to off Cape Cuvier, Western Australia. Elsewhere widespread in tropical and temperate Oceans, apart from Eastern Pacific; mesopelagic, migrating from about 900 m during day to upper 200 m at night, but not reaching surface, taken below 1500 m in Atlantic.
Features	Meristic features: Dorsal-fin rays: 14-15 (usually 14) Anal-fin rays: 13-15 Pectoral-fin rays: 13-16 (usually 14-15) Pelvic-fin rays: 8 Gill rakers: 4–7 (usually 6) + 14–15 AO photophores: 4–7 (usually 6) + 4–6 (usually 5–6) VO photophores: 5 PO photophores level; luminous scales-like tissue present between the pelvic-fin base and the anus, and above the anal fin, with smaller luminous patches elsewhere on the body.
Colour	Skin black; fins clear.
