Genus Maroubra
Temperate Australian and Japanese genus with 2 species, one endemic to Australian waters. Body elongate, trunk shallow; head aligned with body; snout moderately long; posterior angles of body rings somewhat elevated and produced to spine‑like points; STR and STAR discontinuous near rear of dorsal‑fin base; ITR and ITAR discontinuous; LTR confluent with LTAR and STAR; eggs brooded on open undersurface of trunk; tail not prehensile; opercles with complete ridge angled upward toward gill opening, with prominent supplemental ridges radiating below; dorsal fin closer to tip of tail than head, with base of moderate length; anal fin tiny, below front half of dorsal fin; caudal fin tiny; pectoral fins present.
